User Psychology at its Most Basic

The human mind can affect every aspect of our lives, from work to relationships to personal well-being. However, a recent field within this research has developed in correlation with the advancement of technology: user psychology.

There are always reasons why we as humans behave or react in a certain way. Those same reasons dictate which products we buy, which apps we download, what services we seek, and what websites we use. The Nielsen Norman group, composed of leaders from around the world in user experience, details various research and studies between user experience and psychology. Why are people more inclined to click an animated button? Why do the feelings of an app mascot (Duolingo for example) affect users? Why do people stay on a page longer if it’s organized in a certain way versus another?

Essentially it has to do with emotions and Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. According to Abraham Maslow, a human’s level of motivation depends on what needs are being met: physiological, safety, love and belonging, esteem, and self-actualization. When a need is met or not met, an emotional response occurs.

A simple view of this in the user experience world is the feel/need statement:

[Product, Service, or App Name] makes me FEEL [FEELING #1] and [FEELING #2] because my NEED for [NEED #1] and [NEED #2] [was or was not] being met.

Let me give you a quick example:

My Airpods make me feel aggravated and anxious because my need for comfort and reliability was not met.

I was initially so excited when Apple released a new generation that looked like the first generation. I own the first-gen and had just lost one of the earbuds, so it was perfect timing. I eagerly bought them only to be completely disappointed within the first minute. They fell out when I smiled or made any facial expressions. It infuriates me that I spent so much money on a product that will make me annoyed every time I put them in. I’m also so anxious that I’m going to lose one or both earbuds so easily.

Our assignment this week was to compare two websites and develop 10 statements for each. I decided to choose Amazon (whose user experience I’m not a fan of) and eBay (more of a fan). The analysis can be found below:
