Dear Data, You Rock

I decided to try my hand at the Dear Data project, which is recording any type of data, along with a personal touch. In this case, I took a look at the historic houses in my hometown of Bristol, RI. Originally, I was going to record every historic house, in the historic district but became so overwhelmed with the amount of data (200+, even after cleaning up).

So I scaled it down further to be the historic houses on the 4th of July parade route. This was much more manageable and removed my stress of trying to fit all of those data points onto a 5×7 index card.

Each house represents the decade that it was built. I drew the shapes of the houses based on the overall styles that I saw for that time period. Each colored line represents the color of a house that was built during that decade. I added patterns to the houses that I had strong reactions to, as noted above.

Decent for the first time, but now I’m inspired to do more!
